Warning signs: "Wanted - Marketing Director or VP"

There are several things that make me weary of working with a potential client company. One of them is when the following search is taking place:

"Wanted - Marketing Director or VP"

Why does this turn me away from wanting to work with them? I have a couple of reasons:

1) You're not interested in finding good talent...just title-chasers. This forces someone to want this job and ensure they get the VP title, no matter how qualified they are. It also makes you, as the company, look like you really don't know what you're seeking.

2) You're not looking at Marketing as a strategic element of the company. If you're offering this job title up, as "VP or Director", chances are you're not really looking to make this person a senior part of the company and therefore are looking at this function as a part of sales or worse...just a trade show jockey.

3) You're going to be looking for a replacement within 6-12 months. Assuming #1 & #2 are true, you're going to find someone seeking the title, or even worse: desperate for a job. Best of luck keeping that person motivated.

Just food for thought. I'm happy to hear if you agree or disagree with this philosophy.
